Nicola Tilley
SWAc Born: 1956, Moascar, Egypt. Educated: Maidstone Grammar School. Moved to Cornwall: 1978. Joined StISA: 1999. Elected Chair: 2003. Elected a Member of The South West Academy: 2006 Member of Advisory Panel to Environment Agency - St.Ives Flood Defence Scheme, Public Art: 2006. “Recognised exponent and authority on watercolour painting” – Frank Ruhrmund, 2002. Nicola has had four solo shows and has exhibited in numerous mixed exhibitions from the Mall Galleries, London to the The South West Academy, Exeter and in 2005 was a finalist in the prestigious Singer & Freidlander watercolour competition. She has work in major collections such as: Chris Beetles, St. James, SW1, The Christian Guild and The National Trust and in private collections worldwide. She is a popular lecturer and demonstrator with Art Societies in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall and a regular workshop leader for The National Trust. “I’ve chosen to paint in watercolour because no other medium is so demanding. With no inherent weight or texture, it has traditionally been seen as the more tentative mode of expression. The challenge for me is to make my paintings as monumental, final and absolute as possible – while still exploiting the unique properties of the medium”. |
