JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE
GALLERY ASSISTANT
Job title:
Gallery Assistant
Responsible to: Gallery Manager
Part-time: 2.days a week
Salary scale: £12, 747, pro-rata (£6.54 per hour)
Main responsibilities
To run the gallery in the
manager’s absence, and provide administrative support to the Society
Main tasks
Responsible for the
gallery in the manager’s absence
Security, basic cleaning, invigilation
Selling and recording sales of artworks, packing and despatching
Contacting members for stock and stock replacement
Greeting visitors, updating and providing information on artists
Assisting with visitor questionnaires and analysis
Exhibitions
Assisting with setting up exhibitions
Inviting members and potential candidates to submit works
Exhibition invitation mailings
Administration
Assistance on the newsletter: contacting members for copy, mailing
Inputting sales data onto spreadsheets
Data entry on to databases
Stock counts and updating stock information
Dealing with emails and calls to the Society
Providing information to potential hirers
Word processing correspondence and other documents as required by the manager,
Chair or Honorary Officers
Other duties
Reporting of possible Health and Safety risks to the Chair, or Gallery
Manager, and taking action as advised
Other tasks as appropriate and as directed by the Gallery Manager, Chair or
other Honorary Officer.
Compliance
The post-holder has to comply with all policies of the Society, the
requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, and all employment
legislation including equalities legislation on race, gender, sexual
orientation, disability, religion and age.
Line Management
The post-holder is responsible to the Gallery Manager and will have regular
and frequent meetings to agree and review tasks and performance. There will be a
more formal performance appraisal once a year.
Terms and Conditions
The post-holder is employed on a short-term temporary contract for 2 days
per week. The days per week to be worked may vary depending on the time of
year. The post-holder will be required to work some Saturdays, Sundays and Bank
Holidays by negotiation with the Gallery Manager.
Figures are based on a
working week of 37.5 hours, and a working day of 7.5 hours. Annual leave and
Bank Holiday entitlement is based pro-rata on 20 days annual leave and 8 days
Bank Holidays, to be authorised by the Chair and agreed in negotiation with the
Gallery Manager. There is no enhancement for Bank Holiday or week-end working.
