Most of my work is
based around fabrics, and is very much influenced by the materials
used. I adore using vintage prints from the 1940’s-50’s, buttons,
beads, trims, jewellery fixings and treasures from the workbox.
There is something wonderfully evocative about fabrics that have led
a previous life of their own – either as a garment or practical
object, for example a pillowcase, tea cosy or apron. The careworn
frayed edges of a favourite cushion to the stiffly starched shirt
collar all bring their own emotion to the finished piece, which I
feel is important.
My work naturally has a feminine, nostalgic appeal and almost always
portrays the female form in one way or another – from the curvaceous
motherly figures to waif like girls – all are celebrated!
Along with aspects of the body I’m also fascinated with daily
domestic life and weave details from the past.
The result creates smiles of recognition and delight in the eyes of
those who know what it feels to be a woman and an enchanting
curiosity for others. |
