Using the Cornish landscape as a starting point my work owes its creation to the diversity of artists who have used Cornwall as inspiration for their work. I aim to interpret the sense of place I feel when walking and drawing in certain areas of the county. Deeply rooted in the powerful force of nature certain places evoke inherited primal memories and connections to these ancient ways that have been used for centuries.
Initial charcoal and ink drawings evolve into images that use mark making and surface embellishment, images are lost and found again, extraneous detail is removed, the work is stripped down to its bare essentials. There is little pictorial depth in my work, areas of pattern occur, colour is used to emphasise an emotion or sensation.
I seek to represent the memory of the land and the bones beneath, true to life realism is not my aim, provoking a response is and by simplifying what I see and experience I hope to take the images beyond nature.
